Chester came to us in July of 2019 in very poor shape. We were given him by his owner being told he was very old and had developed big lumps on his face in the past couple months. We found out as we were picking him up that he was also an intact stud. Once getting him to the sanctuary we contacted our sanctuary vet immediately. She hurried out to give him a checkup and help us best decide what course of action to take to get him healthy. When she started his dental we found out he was only 4 years old and when his baby teeth had shed as a 3 year old they hadn’t released properly and had bored holes up into his sinuses. As a result his sinuses filled with chewed food leading to severe infection and, had we not taken him, would have resulted in him starving to death. He is what we consider a severe neglect case. Chester has been a challenge for us with his many dental needs and for a time had to be on soaked feed as he had difficulty chewing hay. He is now gelded and lives with the big herd in the grass pasture. He spends all his time with Gypsy and Stormy as they decided he was going to be their best friend after letting him out with the herd. He’s warmed up to human contact and loves hugs and pets now.
